Netflix viewers have said its latest ‘wacky and insane’ true crime documentary is the best thing they’ve seen on screen all year.

They have binged all three episodes of The Kings of Tupelo: A Southern Crime Saga in one sitting after being gripped by its ‘unhinged’ story.

It tells the tale of Elvis impersonator and janitor Kevin Curtis whose world is rocked after discovering a severed head in a hospital fridge.

What ensues is a web of conspiracy theories, lies and a feud that spirals into an attempted presidential assassination in a premise that has been compared to Tiger King.

On X, fans have devoured The Kings of Tupelo which has been hailed as ‘better than any movie in 2024’, a bold statement after the release of blockbuster films including Wicked.

@SPORTSandTV1 raved: ‘#TheKingsofTupelo (on Netflix) is the best, & certainly most dense, doc I have ever seen. It’s true crime, but so much more than that. It made me feel more than any other movie this year. There is just so much to unpack. A new standard for the genre. 10/10.’

Echoing their sentiment, @frank21274 said: If this wasn’t the most wackiest, completely hilarious, unhinged, most insane true crime docuseries to date, I don’t know what is. 5 damn stars. You can’t make that up. Or can you? #TheKingsofTupelo.’

@rocktober19 enthused: ‘Kings of Tupelo on Netflix might be the craziest/dumbest/funniest thing I’ve ever watched. Right there with Tiger King.’

Agreeing, @_ThomasAnthony wrote: ‘#TheKingsOfTupelo documentary on Netflix is top tier. Absolutely hilarious.’

@Kcastlem added: ‘I cannot wait for more people to watch #TheKingsOfTupelo this feels like a fever dream.’

Kings of Tupelo is not the only Netflix true crime documentary to have bowled over viewers.

Millions tuned in to watch ‘nuts’ series Worst Ex Ever about domestic violence, which was also previously the streamer’s number one most-watched TV show in the world.

It was watched 8,400,000 times in just one week nearly two million more than the second most popular show at the time Emily in Paris season 4, with a total of 32,300,000 hours viewed

Each episode is about a different American woman’s experiences of being violently abused by their male partners using testimonials, bodycam footage and animated reenactments.

On X viewers have been saying Worst Ex Ever was one of the best-produced true crime documentaries on Netflix for years, with @itsmuluba exclaiming: ‘You’ve got me hooked @blumhouse I don’t know how you keep doing it. #WorstRoommateEver#WorstExEver’.

@msbiancpr said: ’Yall know I am a true Crime Junkie and I am hooked on this #WorstExEver and the two cases I’ve seen so far show me nothing but that American justice system is the WORST! I’m so [annoyed].’

In September, Netflix revealed viewers would have a lot more to binge after announcing a raft of new documentaries at the Edinburgh TV festival, including one about fashion icon Victoria Beckham.

The yet untitled docuseries will follow the 50-year-old’s time in the spotlight ‘from Spice Girls superstardom in the ‘90s to modern fashion maven’

‘Her Posh Spice days may be behind her, but today Beckham is on a journey to build a fashion empire — and now, fans will be able to see the story behind it all,’ the synopsis for the programme teases.

During the panel the streaming service also announced documentaries about chef Gordon Ramsay, 90s boy band Take That, the 7/7 London bombings and sports promoters.

The Kings of Tupelo: A Southern Crime Saga is available to stream on Netflx.
