ITV star ‘lucky’ to avoid falling down horrifying 50-foot sinkhole at his Welsh home

If you wondered whose house was partly engulfed by a 50ft sinkhole on December 1, that would be Love Island winner Liam Reardon.

Liam and Millie Court won the ITV dating show in 2021 and now they document their post-villa relationship via their podcast, Liam and Millie.

But what listeners didn’t expect from this week’s episode was for Liam identify himself as the occupant of the viral sinkhole-struck house in South Wales.

Liam has revealed how his wall and driveway were totally engulfed by a huge sinkhole in a spot he’d driven over that very morning.

‘I’ve had this very, very strange, unusual week,’ Liam began, talking on their latest podcast episode.

‘Many of you would have noticed this massive sink hole in Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales. It’s my house. It’s my driveway.’

Liam had explained how they recently sold his family home, so they moved into this rental property a few months ago.

‘I left the house at 11am in the morning on Saturday. I drove over the park where the hole is and the tarmac hadn’t broken by that point,’ Liam recalled.

At 2pm Liam’s family got a call to inform them they had a small sinkhole at the end of our drive. Little did they know how big it was going to get.

‘So we were in the house Sunday morning having breakfast,’ Liam said with his Welsh twang, explaining how engineers and highway maintenance were working on the mysterious hole, while neighbours gathered to see the damage.

‘We were like, it is what it is,’ Liam recalled, remembering them thinking that it wasn’t an ideal situation, but such is life.

‘All of a sudden our front gates and front wall just disappeared into the hole. Our driveway started being eaten away,’ Liam recalled.

‘So everyone on the street is shouting, “Get out of the house!”. I’m having my cup of coffee, my yoghurt, my eggs, and the drive had just fallen away.’

The family then had to pack bags and evacuate the house, which has now been totally emptied and is set to be demolished. While it’s far from ideal so close to Christmas, Liam is grateful the consequences weren’t worse.

‘We park our cars where that hole was. I drove over it in the morning, so luckily the tarmac didn’t break then as I would have ended up in 60ft under in a hole,’ he said.

‘Thankfully none of us are injured.’

There was heavy rain in parts of Wales on the weekend the sinkhole appeared, just days after Storm Bert caused devastation across parts of the country.

Merthyr Council issued a statement at the time which said: ‘No further help or support is needed at this time but thank you to everyone who has offered it. Safety is our main priority.’

They also issued a warning, saying: ‘To allow engineers to keep working safely, please stay away from the area.’
